Description
The novel takes place in Saint-Louis-du-Sénégal during the colonial era. It recounts a brief period in Nini's life: her encounter with a white man who promises her marriage.
"Nini is the eternal moral portrait of the mulatto woman, whether from Senegal, the West Indies, or the Americas. She is the portrait of the physically and morally hybrid being who, in the unconsciousness of her most spontaneous reactions, always seeks to rise above the condition imposed on her, that is, above a humanity she considers inferior but to which destiny inexorably binds her."
