Description
It all started so well. A wedding, that of the heroine's mother, Nogaye, a young Serer girl from Niodor. Her wedding to Serigne Yamar, a "great religious dignitary, passionate about Koranic sciences, clairvoyance, and traditional medicine," is celebrated at the beginning of the story. Nogaye, herself from a polygamous household, becomes the second wife of this notable, much older than her. Accompanied by her aunt, Arame, and Mame Téning, the saltigué of Niodor, she joins her husband in Saint-Louis. She also meets Serigne Yamar's first wife, Dior Seck, who had no children with her husband, but is raising her two nieces, Soda and Ndella. Later, it is with them that Raabi, Nogaye's daughter, will be confronted with the cruel jealousy that will serve as a trigger for the outpouring of hatred from this Aunt Dior to whom she will be entrusted by her mother, to fulfill the last wishes of her late father. From then on, the curse falls relentlessly on Raabi, with the talent of a narrator who multiplies the tragic episodes suffered by the young girl.
