Description
Balanite or desert date oil
Moisturizing; it softens and repairs dry, rough and flaky skin. This oil also has relaxing properties. The fruit and leaves of Balanites are used in the diet of local populations. The fruit, called Kelgga in Mooré, is usually eaten (sucked like candy and sold in urban markets) fresh by sucking once its epicarp has been removed. Its taste is sweet, with a hint of bitterness. This consumption is similar to that of a date or a candy. Occasionally, it is used in the preparation of an alcoholic drink, served as a stimulant of digestion, The almond is very popular with the country population, despite the presence of balantine, in principle bitter but that can be eliminated by decoctions repeated. Bitter and sweet in taste, the fruit, known as wild dates, is popular.
